Founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance in 2018, Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17) raises awareness about the inequities Black birthing people face.
Inspired by this movement, Toronto held its first Black Maternal Health Week in 2025, led by the Black Maternal Health Collective Canada. The week featured events, workshops, and landmark lightings under the theme “Amplifying Our Voices.” In the same year, Ontario passed Bill 209, officially recognizing April as Black Maternal Health Month. The Collective continues to lead advocacy, education, and action to improve Black maternal and reproductive health outcomes in Canada.
